The short version
- AI builds its picture of you from everything it can find, not just your website. When those sources disagree, it guesses.
- In a short audit for a building firm, we asked AI tools 22 questions their buyers might ask. They were named in three answers, with a different name each time.
- You can’t see the cost, because it happens in answers you never read.
- The tempting shortcuts all have the same flaw: they don’t show you what a stranger sees.
- Find out what AI is saying, fix what it’s reading, and give everyone the right files so it can’t get you wrong.
Buyers now ask AI tools who to shortlist before they ever visit a website. Forrester found 94% of business buyers use AI somewhere in their buying process. Those tools are describing your business, recommending your competitors and, increasingly, redrawing your logo. That’s what AI brand consistency comes down to: whether the tools tell one story about you, or several.
If someone senior has asked whether you show up, and you weren’t sure how to answer, you’re not behind. Almost nobody has looked.
Why AI brand consistency breaks down
AI builds its picture of you from everything it can find, not just your website. When those sources disagree, it guesses.
Old directory listings. Partner and supplier pages. A press release from five years ago. Your LinkedIn page. A reseller’s flyer with your logo on it. The tools mix all of it together.
If your name is written three different ways, they can’t be sure it’s one business. If each profile describes you differently, they average it, and the average is usually generic. And they can’t redraw a logo accurately from a picture. They make something close and fill the gaps. We’ve seen partners send out AI-made versions of a client’s logo with arrows and shapes added that were never in the original.
What we found when we checked
In a short audit for a building firm, we asked AI tools 22 questions their buyers might ask. They were named in three answers, with a different name each time.
The firm was known by its founders’ initials, written several ways over the years. Everyone inside knew it was the same business. The tools didn’t.
Their leadership took the report to the board as the reality of the problem. That’s the thing about AI visibility: it’s invisible until someone looks.
What it’s costing you
You can’t see the cost, because it happens in answers you never read.
What doesn’t fix it
The tempting shortcuts all have the same flaw: they don’t show you what a stranger sees.
“I’ll just ask ChatGPT about us.” It’ll be shaped by your own history, and asking about your own name isn’t the test. The test is the question your buyer types, where your name isn’t in it.
“Our website is right, so we’re fine.” The website is one source among hundreds. It’s the one you control, not the one AI relies on.
“We’ve got brand guidelines.” A PDF that gets opened once doesn’t stop a partner’s AI tool redrawing your logo.
“It’ll all change in six months.” The tools will. What they reward won’t: being clear, being consistent and being mentioned beyond your own site.
What fixes it
Find out what AI is saying, fix what it’s reading, and give everyone the right files so it can’t get you wrong.
Our AI visibility audit starts with a session to work out what your buyers actually ask. Then we ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google’s AI answers those questions, logged out and clean, and show you the answers word for word: who gets recommended, which sources get cited and what’s stopping them seeing you. You get a to-do list in priority order. Two weeks, £2,800 + VAT.
A logo is how you’re recognised. A design system is how you’re trusted. Brand assets and design systems gives your team and partners one place to get the real files, the right words and the rules for using them, built so AI tools produce something that looks like you, not like everyone else. From £2,800 + VAT per phase, or £9,950 + VAT for all three.
If the audit shows the problem is bigger than consistency, and the brand no longer reflects the business, that’s a rebrand, and the audit becomes its baseline.

Questions about AI brand consistency
It combines every source it finds. If those sources disagree, it guesses. It also can’t redraw a logo from a picture, so give partners the real vector file and ask them to use it.
Ask the tools the questions your buyers ask, not your company name, from a clean account with no history. Record who’s named and which sources are cited. An AI visibility audit does this properly across all the main tools.
Not on their own. They’re two different systems. A business can rank well on Google and be missing from the AI answer to the same question.
