The short version
- Tracking tools only see clicks. Most of what persuades a B2B buyer never involves one.
- More of the buying journey is happening where you can’t see it, and AI is a big part of the reason.
- When the report can only see the last click, you end up cutting the wrong things.
- The usual answer is more tracking. You can’t track your way out of a problem that happens offline.
- Instead of asking which channel worked, ask whether the campaign moved the number.
- Set the baseline, join up the data so you can see the lift, and find out what AI is telling your buyers.
A buyer meets you at a trade show. A month later they read one of your articles. Then a colleague mentions you, they ask ChatGPT who to shortlist, search your name and fill in the contact form.
Your report says Google brought them in. The stand that cost you thousands gets nothing. So next time the budget is tight, the event looks like the obvious thing to cut.
Why it happens
Tracking tools only see clicks. Most of what persuades a B2B buyer never involves one.
Conversations at a stand. A recommendation from a peer. A podcast. A LinkedIn post someone read and didn’t click. An AI tool naming you in its answer. None of it shows up, so the tools hand all the credit to the last thing they could see.
The effect is also slower than the report. Thinkbox’s Profit Ability 2 study found 58% of the profit from advertising arrives after the first 13 weeks. Judge it on this month’s clicks and you miss most of it.
Why it hurts more now
More of the buying journey is happening where you can’t see it, and AI is a big part of the reason.
Buyers are asking AI tools to compare suppliers before they ever visit a website. If those tools recommend you, you get the credit for nothing. If they recommend someone else, you never find out you lost. Most marketing teams have no idea which is happening.
What it’s costing you
When the report can only see the last click, you end up cutting the wrong things.
What doesn’t fix it
The usual answer is more tracking. You can’t track your way out of a problem that happens offline.
“We need multi-touch attribution software.” It’s expensive, it still can’t see a conversation at a stand, and its model is only as good as the assumptions you feed it.
“If we can’t track it, it isn’t working.” That belief is how B2B firms talk themselves out of brand building without meaning to.
“Let’s prove each channel separately.” B2B buyers don’t experience your marketing channel by channel. Measuring it that way gives you a precise answer to the wrong question.
A better question
Instead of asking which channel worked, ask whether the campaign moved the number.
Know your normal level of enquiries. Run joined-up campaigns with a start and an end date, across every channel at once. Then look at the lift against your normal, over the 90 days after, not just the week. And ask every new enquiry how they first heard of you. People will tell you things no tracking tool can, including when an AI tool sent them.
It isn’t perfect. Nothing in B2B attribution is. But it’s honest, and it’s the story a board can actually follow: we ran this, enquiries rose from here to here, and this is what they turned into.
What fixes it
Set the baseline, join up the data so you can see the lift, and find out what AI is telling your buyers.
Our connected data and reporting work joins the tools you already pay for, so enquiries, pipeline and revenue sit in one place and a campaign’s lift is there to see. No more day lost to building a report nobody trusts.
Our AI visibility audit covers the part no tracking tool can. We ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google’s AI answers the questions your buyers ask, and show you who gets recommended, word for word. Two weeks, £2,800 + VAT.
If your campaigns aren’t joined up in the first place, content and campaigns plans them from your positioning, so every channel is pointing at the same thing.

Questions about B2B marketing attribution
Not on its own. B2B buyers meet you many times before they get in touch. Last click gives all the credit to the final step, so events and brand activity look like they do nothing.
Compare enquiries in the 90 days after it with your normal level, ask new enquiries how they heard of you, and compare what you win with the full cost. You won’t get certainty. You will get a decision you can defend.
Not with analytics. You have to ask the tools the questions your buyers ask and record the answers. That’s what an AI visibility audit does.
