Marketing as a solo marketer often feels like an endless marathon.

With rapidly changing trends, constant pressure to innovate, no one to bounce ideas off & the ever-present need to prove ROI, it can be exhausting.

If you’re feeling isolated & overwhelmed by the sheer volume of decisions you need to make, you’re not alone.

Here are 8 tips from Squibble to get you off on the right track:

1. Embrace continuous learning

Marketing is ever-changing, what worked yesterday might not work today. The best way to keep up is by continuously learning & adapting.

Kim’s top tip: Dedicate at least an hour a week to learning something new. It could have to do with a new social media update, SEO techniques or content marketing insights. This not only improves your skillset but also boosts your confidence in making those tough marketing decisions.

2. Build your network

Feeling alone in your marketing efforts is common, but it doesn’t have to be your reality. Building a network of peers, mentors & industry professionals can provide you with support, fresh perspectives & valuable feedback.

Squibble’s favourite Birmingham-based networking get-togethers:

Kim’s top tip: Make it a point to connect with at least one new person in your industry each month. Whether it’s through LinkedIn or a local event, expanding your network can give you a sounding board for your ideas and challenges.

3. Leverage technology

Tech can be your best friend. Tools like Hootsuite, HubSpot & Canva can streamline your processes, automate repetitive tasks & provide insights that guide your decisions.

Kim’s top tip: Audit your current tech stack & identify any gaps. Are there processes that could be automated? Are you getting the most out of your analytics? Investing in the right tech can save you time & reduce the overwhelm.

4. Set realistic goals

It’s easy to feel like you’re falling behind when you set unrealistic goals. Instead, break down your overarching business & marketing objectives into smaller, more manageable tasks. This not only makes your workload seem less daunting but also allows you to celebrate small wins along the way.

Kim’s top tip: Use the SMART framework (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound) to set your goals. Review them regularly to ensure they are still aligned with your overall strategy & adjust as needed.

5. Prioritise self-care

Marketing burnout is real. High expectations & constant online connectivity can take a toll on your mental & physical health. Prioritising self-care is crucial to maintaining your momentum in the long run.

Kim’s top tip: Schedule regular breaks throughout your day. Use techniques like the Pomodoro Technique to ensure you’re not working for too long without a rest. Additionally, make sure to unplug after work hours to recharge fully.

6. Seek feedback & be open to change

One of the most isolating aspects of marketing can be the feeling you have to make all decisions on your own. However, seeking feedback from stakeholders, customers & even friends can provide valuable insights & reduce the burden of decision-making.

Kim’s top tip: Implement a regular feedback loop. This could be through surveys, focus groups or simply asking for opinions during meetings. Constructive criticism can help you see your blind spots & improve your strategies.

7. Celebrate your wins

In the rush to keep up with the latest trends & meet deadlines, we often forget to celebrate our achievements. Recognising your successes, no matter how small, can boost your morale & motivate you to keep going.

Kim’s top tip: Keep a ‘feedback’ folder on your desktop where you can screenshot & save your achievements. Reflect on this folder regularly to remind yourself of your progress & the positive impact of your efforts.

8. Collaborate for success

Leverage the strengths of colleagues in other teams. Collaboration can lead to more innovative solutions & a more cohesive marketing strategy. For example, ask the sales team for feedback on customer sentiment.

Kim’s top tip: Book regular team meetings to ensure everyone is on the same page & working towards common goals.

To conclude, running a marketing marathon doesn’t have to be a lonely endeavour. By embracing the above tips, you can maintain your momentum, bolster your confidence & feel more connected.

Remember, marketing isn’t just about the finish line, it’s about the journey & the growth you experience along the way.
